He Did not Want to Swear an Oath

23 Iyar 5783 – 14 May 2023

R’ Yisroel Meir HaKohen of Radin (the Chofetz Chaim) was once called to court as a character witness. However, he said he would not be sworn in because his entire life he avoided taking any oaths.

The attorney tried to explain to the judge that because of the unusual saintliness of this sage, it wouldn’t be necessary to swear him in. “He once saw a thief running out of his place with a set of candlesticks. He immediately renounced ownership of them so the person would not be guilty of theft!”

The judge barked, “Do you really expect me to believe that?”

”Well, your honour. I don’t know if all the stories I’ve heard about this rabbi are absolutely true. But I do know one thing. No one goes around telling stories like this about you or I.”
