| The Third Foundation G-d’s non-physicality: his belief is that the One Whom we have mentioned in not a body or a form of bodily power. Phenomena that occur to physical bodies do not apply to Him, such as movement, rest or dwelling, neither from His Essence or from an outside occurrence. Therefore, the Sages denied any possibility of His composition of dissolution, and said (TB Chagiga 15a), “Above, there is no sitting and no standing; no back or front (which is dissolution) and no back (which is composition), as in, “they thrust their shoulder upon the Philistines” (Isaiah 11:4), i.e. they would push them with their shoulder (left flank) to engage them. Similarly, the prophet said, “and to whom will you compare Me that I should be equated with, says the Holy One?” For if He had a body, He would be similar to other corporeal entities. All references to Him in Scripture which describe Him with physical characteristics, such as going, standing, sitting, and speech and the like, are merely borrowed terms, as the Sages have said (Berachot 31b), “the Torah speaks in the language of people”, and they have expounded very much on this idea. This third principle is alluded to in the verse, “for you did not see any image…” (Deuteronomy 4:15). In other words, you did not grasp Him as having an image, because He, as we have mentioned, does not possess a physical body nor the power of a physical body. | היסוד השלישי שלילת הגשמות ממנו וזה שנאמין כי האחד הזה שזכרנו אינו גוף ולא כח בגוף ולא ישיגוהו מאורעות הגופים כמו התנועה והמנוחה והמשכן לא מצד עצמות ולא במקרה ולכן שללו ממנו החכמים ז”ל החבור והפירוד ואמרו (חגיגה טו.) אין למעלה לא ישיבה ולא עמידה לא עורף ולא עפוי כלומר לא פירוד ולא עורף והוא חבור והוא עפוי מלשון ועפו בכתף פלשתים כלומר ידחפו אותם בכתף להתחברם בהם ואמר הנביא ואל מי תדמיוני ואשוה יאמר קדוש אילו היה גוף [היה] דומה לגופים וכל מה שבא בכתבי הקדש שמתארים אותו בתארי הגופות כמו ההליכה והעמידה והישיבה והדבור וכיוצא בזה הכל דרך השאלה וכן אמרו ז”ל (ברכות לא:) דברה תורה כלשון בני אדם וכבר דברו החכמים בזה הענין הרבה והיסוד השלישי הזה הוא מורה עליו מה שנאמר כי לא ראיתם כל תמונה כלומר לא השגתם אותו בעל תמונה לפי שהוא כמו שזכרנו אינו גוף ולא כח בגוף: |
2. TB Chagiga 15a
| Acher cut his roots, and about him it is said, “do not allow your mouth to cause your flesh to sin” [i.e., do not say things that will bring you disfavor] (Ecclesiastes 5:5). What did he say? He saw the angel M”T”T, who was given permission to sit and write a list of the merits of Israel. He said, “I learned that there is no sitting or standing, no back and no front. Perhaps [Heaven forbid] there are two domains!” | אַחֵר קִיצֵּץ בִּנְטִיעוֹת, עָלָיו הַכָּתוּב אוֹמֵר: ״אַל תִּתֵּן אֶת פִּיךָ לַחֲטִיא אֶת בְּשָׂרֶךָ״. מַאי הִיא? חֲזָא מֶיטַטְרוֹן דְּאִתְיְהִבָא לֵיהּ רְשׁוּתָא לְמֵיתַב לְמִיכְתַּב זַכְווֹתָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל, אֲמַר: גְּמִירִי דִּלְמַעְלָה לָא הָוֵי לֹא יְשִׁיבָה וְלֹא תַּחֲרוּת, וְלֹא עוֹרֶף וְלֹא עִיפּוּי. שֶׁמָּא, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, שְׁתֵּי רְשׁוּיוֹת הֵן. |
3. Isaiah 11:14
| And they will thrust their shoulder together upon the Philistines westward, and despoil those who dwell in the east; they will place their hands upon Edom and Moab, and subdue the Children of Amon. | וְעָפ֨וּ בְכָתֵ֤ף פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ יָ֔מָּה יַחְדָּ֖ו יָבֹ֣זּוּ אֶת־בְּנֵי־קֶ֑דֶם אֱד֤וֹם וּמוֹאָב֙ מִשְׁל֣וֹחַ יָדָ֔ם וּבְנֵ֥י עַמּ֖וֹן מִשְׁמַעְתָּֽם׃ |

| Guard your souls carefully, for you did not see any image on the day that G-d spoke to you from within the fire. | וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם מְאֹ֖ד לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֣י לֹ֤א רְאִיתֶם֙ כׇּל־תְּמוּנָ֔ה בְּי֗וֹם דִּבֶּ֨ר ד’ אֲלֵיכֶ֛ם בְּחֹרֵ֖ב מִתּ֥וֹךְ הָאֵֽשׁ׃ |
