Deuteronomy 5:4 – Modesty is Noteworthy

14 Av 5783 – 1 August 2023

“Face to face did Hashem speak to you on the mountain, from within the fire” (Deuteronomy 5:4).

Hashem chose Mt. Sinai for the giving of the Torah because it was the lowest and most humble of all the mountains. The Kotzker Rebbe asked that if Hashem wanted lowliness and humility – why not give the Torah in a valley?

He answered that it’s not so amazing for someone who is like a “valley”, with few worthy character traits to be humble. They don’t really have much to be proud of. However, for someone who ranks as a “mountain” with many outstanding qualities, but despite that remains modest – that is noteworthy.
