Pirkei Avot 2:11 – The Evil Eye and the Good Eye

בס”ד

Pirkei Avot 2:11

Rabbi Joshua said: an evil eye, the evil inclination, and hatred for humankind put a person out of the world.

The Evil Eye is the eye that cannot see that someone has something, and it manifests itself in various forms of envy. Material things, health, family, honor, good name, and so on. What another has is not given to the other. The next step is that this jealousy fuels the evil inclination. It leads someone to speak evil, become furious, steal, or worse. The next step is that a person does not even envy another person in order to develop negative feelings, but instead hates them for no apparent reason.

Let us grant another what G-d has assigned to him. Lets give him the good eye. Let us train our good inclination by being happy for the other person, helping him along in his success. Let’s learn to care about people purely because they are G-d creatures.
