SUKKOT AND NOAHIDES

The holiday of Sukkot has several aspects

  • Sukkah
  • Lulav
  • The mussaf-offerings
  • Seven-day periode of observance, followed by a separate holidy call Shemini Atzeret
  • The mitzvah and ritual aspects pertain to Jews
  • The Sukkah commemorates the fact that the Jews lived in sukkot (booths) during the exodus from Egypt
    • Also, the sukkah represents the Clouds of Glory that protected the Jews during their soujourn in the desert
  • Question: given that everything that pertains to Sukkot relates to a mitzvah commanded of Jews and which commemorates historical events in the history of the Jewish people, is sukkot of any relevance to Noahides?
  • Answer: yes
    • 70 sacrificial bulls represent the seventy nations of the world; the physical aspect, which diminishes over time
      • This practice should be contrasted with the Chanukah candles, which represent the spiritual aspect of man, which increases over time
      • 70 years is representative of the human life span
    • 1st day haftara: Zecharia 14:16-17, which speak of non-Jews coming to Jerusalem to prostrate themselves to G-d and celebrate Sukkot
    • 2nd day haftara (outside of Israel) I Kings 8:2-21; verses 41-43 of that section speak of non-Jews being welcome in the Temple and King Solomon actually beseeches G-d to hear the prayer of the non-Jew when he prays in the direction of the Temple
    • Shabbat Chol HaMoed haftara: Ezekiel 38:18-39:16 speaks of the invasion and utter defeat of Gog, which is the final apocalyptic war between good and evil and takes place on Sukkot.
      • Gog = related to the Hebrew word gag, which means, “roof”. Why are these the enemies of Israel? Because it represents the opposite of the sukkah. The Sukkah is so called because of the Schach, the covering of the sukkah, made of natural material and arranged in such a way that those who dwell in the sukkah are exposed to the elements. This represents total reliance on and faith in G-d. The walls can be of any material, even the strongest. Yet, the roof must be porous and temporary. Contrast this with life under a roof. The impenetrable roof not only represents a disconnection from G-d, but a reliance on and faith in one’s own works. The walls of the sukkah are strong, representing human resilience and durability; the roof represents human vulnerability and therefore, the need to rely ultimately on G-d. This is the universal message that Noahides can take from Sukkot.

The L-rd spoke to Moses, saying: Say to the Israelite people:
On the fifteenth day of this seventh month there shall be the Feast of Booths to the L-rd, [to last] seven days. The first day shall be a sacred occasion: you shall not work at your occupations; seven days you shall bring offerings by fire to the L-rd. On the eighth day you shall observe a sacred occasion and bring an offering by fire to the L-rd; it is a solemn gathering: you shall not work at your occupations. Those are the set times of the L-rd that you shall celebrate as sacred occasions, bringing offerings by fire to the L-rd —burnt offerings, meal offerings, sacrifices, and libations, on each day what is proper to it— apart from the sabbaths of the L-rd, and apart from your gifts and from all your votive offerings and from all your freewill offerings that you give to the L-rd. Mark, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the yield of your land, you shall observe the festival of the L-rd [to last] seven days: a complete rest on the first day, and a complete rest on the eighth day. On the first day you shall take the product of hadar trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the L-rd your G-d seven days. You shall observe it as a festival of the L-rd for seven days in the year; you shall observe it in the seventh month as a law for all time, throughout the ages. You shall live in booths seven days; all citizens in Israel shall live in booths, in order that future generations may know that I made the Israelite people live in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I the L-rd your G-d. So Moses declared to the Israelites the set times of the L-rd.

2. Numbers 29:12 –

On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, you shall observe a sacred occasion: you shall not work at your occupations.—Seven days you shall observe a festival of the L-rd.— You shall present a burnt offering, an offering by fire of pleasing odor to the L-rd: Thirteen bulls of the herd, two rams, fourteen yearling lambs; they shall be without blemish. The meal offerings with them—of choice flour with oil mixed in—shall be: three-tenths of a measure for each of the thirteen bulls, two-tenths for each of the two rams, and one-tenth for each of the fourteen lambs. And there shall be one goat for a sin offering—in addition to the regular burnt offering, its meal offering and libation. Second day: Twelve bulls of the herd, two rams, fourteen yearling lambs, without blemish; the meal offerings and libations for the bulls, rams, and lambs, in the quantities prescribed; and one goat for a sin offering—in addition to the regular burnt offering, its meal offering and libations. Third day: Eleven bulls, two rams, fourteen yearling lambs, without blemish; the meal offerings and libations for the bulls, rams, and lambs, in the quantities prescribed; and one goat for a sin offering—in addition to the regular burnt offering, its meal offering and libation. Fourth day: Ten bulls, two rams, fourteen yearling lambs, without blemish; the meal offerings and libations for the bulls, rams, and lambs, in the quantities prescribed; and one goat for a sin offering—in addition to the regular burnt offering, its meal offering and libation. 3. Zecharia 14:16-17

Lo, a day of the L-rd is coming when your spoil shall be divided in your very midst! For I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem for war: The city shall be captured, the houses plundered, and the women violated; and a part of the city shall go into exile. But the rest of the population shall not be uprooted from the city. Then the L-rd will come forth and make war on those nations as He is wont to make war on a day of battle. On that day, He will set His feet on the Mount of Olives, near Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives shall split across from east to west, and one part of the Mount shall shift to the north and the other to the south, a huge gorge. And the Valley in the Hills shall be stopped up, for the Valley of the Hills shall reach only to Azal; it shall be stopped up as it was stopped up as a result of the earthquake in the days of King Uzziah of Judah.—And the L-rd my G-d, with all the holy beings, will come to you. In that day, there shall be neither sunlight nor cold moonlight, but there shall be a continuous day—only the L-rd knows when—of neither day nor night, and there shall be light at eventide. In that day, fresh water shall flow from Jerusalem, part of it to the Eastern Sea and part to the Western Sea, throughout the summer and winter. And the L-rd shall be king over all the earth; in that day there shall be one L-rd with one name. Then the whole country shall become like the Arabah, from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem.-h The latter, however, shall perch high up where it is, and -ishall be inhabited-i from the Gate of Benjamin to the site of the Old Gate, down to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses. Never again shall destruction be decreed, and Jerusalem shall dwell secure. As for those peoples that warred against Jerusalem, the L-rd will smite them with this plague: Their flesh shall rot away while they stand on their feet; their eyes shall rot away in their sockets; and their tongues shall rot away in their mouths. In that day, a great panic from the L-rd shall fall upon them, and everyone shall snatch at the hand of another, and everyone shall raise his hand against everyone else’s hand. Judah shall join the fighting in Jerusalem, and the wealth of all the nations round about—vast quantities of gold, silver, and clothing—shall be gathered in. The same plague shall strike the horses, the mules, the camels, and the asses; the plague shall affect all the animals in those camps. All who survive of all those nations that came up against Jerusalem shall make a pilgrimage year by year to bow low to the King L-rd of Hosts and to observe the Feast of Booths. Any of the earth’s communities that does not make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem to bow low to the King L-rd of Hosts shall receive no rain. However, if the community of Egypt does not make this pilgrimage, it shall not be visited by the same affliction with which the L-rd will strike the other nations that do not come up to observe the Feast of Booths. Such shall be the punishment of Egypt and of all other nations that do not come up to observe the Feast of Booths. In that day, even the bells on the horses shall be inscribed “Holy to the L-rd.” The metal pots in the House of the L-rd shall be like the basins before the altar; indeed, every metal pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holy to the L-rd of Hosts. “Or if a foreigner who is not of Your people Israel comes from a distant land for the sake of Your name— for they shall hear about Your great name and Your mighty hand and Your outstretched arm—when he comes to pray toward this House, oh, hear in Your heavenly abode and grant all that the foreigner asks You for. I will set up again the fallen booth of David:

6. Ezekiel 38:18-39:16

On that day, when Gog sets foot on the soil of Israel—declares the L-rd G-d—My raging anger shall flare up. For I have decreed in My indignation and in My blazing wrath: On that day, a terrible earthquake shall befall the land of Israel. The fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that move on the ground, and every human being on earth shall quake before Me. Mountains shall be overthrown, cliffs shall topple, and every wall shall crumble to the ground. I will then summon the sword against him throughout My mountains-d—declares the L-rd G-d—and every man’s sword shall be turned against his brother. I will punish him with pestilence and with bloodshed; and I will pour torrential rain, hailstones, and sulfurous fire upon him and his hordes and the many peoples with him. Thus will I manifest My greatness and My holiness, and make Myself known in the sight of many nations. And they shall know that I am the L-rd. 39 And you, O mortal, prophesy against Gog and say: Thus said the L-rd G-d: I am going to deal with you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal! I will turn you around and drive you on,-a and I will take you from the far north and lead you toward the mountains of Israel. I will strike your bow from your left hand and I will loosen the arrows from your right hand. You shall fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your battalions and the peoples who are with you; and I will give you as food to carrion birds of every sort and to the beasts of the field, as you lie in the open field. For I have spoken—declares the L-rd G-d. And I will send a fire against Magog and against those who dwell secure in the coastlands. And they shall know that I am the L-rd. I will make My holy name known among My people Israel, and never again will I let My holy name be profaned. And the nations shall know that I the L-rd am holy in Israel. Ah! it has come, it has happened—declares the L-rd G-d: this is that day that I decreed. Then the inhabitants of the cities of Israel will go out and make fires and feed them with the weapons—shields and bucklers, bows and arrows, clubs and spears; they shall use them as fuel for seven years. They will not gather firewood in the fields or cut any in the forests, but will use the weapons as fuel for their fires. They will despoil those who despoiled them and plunder those who plundered them—declares the L-rd G-d. On that day I will assign to Gog a burial site there in Israel—the Valley of the Travelers, east of the Sea. It shall block the path of travelers, for there Gog and all his multitude will be buried. It shall be called the Valley of Gog’s Multitude. The House of Israel shall spend seven months burying them, in order to cleanse the land; all the people of the land shall bury them. The day I manifest My glory shall bring renown to them-a—declares the L-rd G-d. And they shall appoint men to serve permanently, to traverse the land and bury any invaders who remain above ground, in order to cleanse it. The search shall go on for a period of seven months. As those who traverse the country make their rounds, any one of them who sees a human bone shall erect a marker beside it, until the buriers have interred them in the Valley of Gog’s Multitude. There shall also be a city named Multitude.-a And thus the land shall be cleansed.וְהָיָ֣ה ׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא בְּי֨וֹם בּ֥וֹא גוֹג֙ עַל־אַדְמַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י ד’ תַּעֲלֶ֥ה חֲמָתִ֖י בְּאַפִּֽי׃ וּבְקִנְאָתִ֥י בְאֵשׁ־עֶבְרָתִ֖י דִּבַּ֑רְתִּי אִם־לֹ֣א ׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא יִֽהְיֶה֙ רַ֣עַשׁ גָּד֔וֹל עַ֖ל אַדְמַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ וְרָעֲשׁ֣וּ מִפָּנַ֡י דְּגֵ֣י הַיָּם֩ וְע֨וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֜יִם וְחַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה וְכׇל־הָרֶ֙מֶשׂ֙ הָֽרֹמֵ֣שׂ עַל־הָאֲדָמָ֔ה וְכֹל֙ הָאָדָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֣י הָאֲדָמָ֑ה וְנֶהֶרְס֣וּ הֶהָרִ֗ים וְנָֽפְלוּ֙ הַמַּדְרֵג֔וֹת וְכׇל־חוֹמָ֖ה לָאָ֥רֶץ תִּפּֽוֹל׃ וְקָרָ֨אתִי עָלָ֤יו לְכׇל־הָרַי֙ חֶ֔רֶב נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֑ה חֶ֥רֶב אִ֖ישׁ בְּאָחִ֥יו תִּהְיֶֽה׃ וְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּ֥י אִתּ֖וֹ בְּדֶ֣בֶר וּבְדָ֑ם וְגֶ֣שֶׁם שׁוֹטֵף֩ וְאַבְנֵ֨י אֶלְגָּבִ֜ישׁ אֵ֣שׁ וְגׇפְרִ֗ית אַמְטִ֤יר עָלָיו֙ וְעַל־אֲגַפָּ֔יו וְעַל־עַמִּ֥ים רַבִּ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתּֽוֹ׃ וְהִתְגַּדִּלְתִּי֙ וְהִתְקַדִּשְׁתִּ֔י וְנ֣וֹדַעְתִּ֔י לְעֵינֵ֖י גּוֹיִ֣ם רַבִּ֑ים וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י ד’׃ {ס}         ל״ט וְאַתָּ֤ה בֶן־אָדָם֙ הִנָּבֵ֣א עַל־גּ֔וֹג וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣י ד’ הִנְנִ֤י אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ גּ֔וֹג נְשִׂ֕יא רֹ֖אשׁ מֶ֥שֶׁךְ וְתֻבָֽל׃ וְשֹׁבַבְתִּ֙יךָ֙ וְשִׁשֵּׁאתִ֔יךָ וְהַעֲלִיתִ֖יךָ מִיַּרְכְּתֵ֣י צָפ֑וֹן וַהֲבִאוֹתִ֖ךָ עַל־הָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ וְהִכֵּיתִ֥י קַשְׁתְּךָ֖ מִיַּ֣ד שְׂמֹאולֶ֑ךָ וְחִצֶּ֕יךָ מִיַּ֥ד יְמִינְךָ֖ אַפִּֽיל׃ עַל־הָרֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל תִּפּ֗וֹל אַתָּה֙ וְכׇל־אֲגַפֶּ֔יךָ וְעַמִּ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתָּ֑ךְ לְעֵ֨יט צִפּ֧וֹר כׇּל־כָּנָ֛ף וְחַיַּ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה נְתַתִּ֥יךָ לְאׇכְלָֽה׃ עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה תִּפּ֑וֹל כִּ֚י אֲנִ֣י דִבַּ֔רְתִּי נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה׃ וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי־אֵ֣שׁ בְּמָג֔וֹג וּבְיֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאִיִּ֖ים לָבֶ֑טַח וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּי־אֲנִ֥י ד’׃ וְאֶת־שֵׁ֨ם קׇדְשִׁ֜י אוֹדִ֗יעַ בְּתוֹךְ֙ עַמִּ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְלֹא־אַחֵ֥ל אֶת־שֵׁם־קׇדְשִׁ֖י ע֑וֹד וְיָדְע֤וּ הַגּוֹיִם֙ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה קָד֖וֹשׁ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ הִנֵּ֤ה בָאָה֙ וְנִֽהְיָ֔תָה נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י ד’ ה֥וּא הַיּ֖וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתִּי׃ וְֽיָצְא֞וּ יֹֽשְׁבֵ֣י ׀ עָרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וּבִעֲר֡וּ וְ֠הִשִּׂ֠יקוּ בְּנֶ֨שֶׁק וּמָגֵ֤ן וְצִנָּה֙ בְּקֶ֣שֶׁת וּבְחִצִּ֔ים וּבְמַקֵּ֥ל יָ֖ד וּבְרֹ֑מַח וּבִעֲר֥וּ בָהֶ֛ם אֵ֖שׁ שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִֽים׃ וְלֹא־יִשְׂא֨וּ עֵצִ֜ים מִן־הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה וְלֹ֤א יַחְטְבוּ֙ מִן־הַיְּעָרִ֔ים כִּ֥י בַנֶּ֖שֶׁק יְבַעֲרוּ־אֵ֑שׁ וְשָׁלְל֣וּ אֶת־שֹׁלְלֵיהֶ֗ם וּבָֽזְזוּ֙ אֶת־בֹּ֣זְזֵיהֶ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י ד’׃ {ס}         וְהָיָ֣ה בַיּ֣וֹם הַה֡וּא אֶתֵּ֣ן לְגוֹג֩ ׀ מְקֽוֹם־שָׁ֨ם קֶ֜בֶר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל גֵּ֤י הָעֹֽבְרִים֙ קִדְמַ֣ת הַיָּ֔ם וְחֹסֶ֥מֶת הִ֖יא אֶת־הָעֹֽבְרִ֑ים וְקָ֣בְרוּ שָׁ֗ם אֶת־גּוֹג֙ וְאֶת־כׇּל־הֲמוֹנֹ֔ה וְקָ֣רְא֔וּ גֵּ֖יא הֲמ֥וֹן גּֽוֹג׃ וּקְבָרוּם֙ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְמַ֖עַן טַהֵ֣ר אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ שִׁבְעָ֖ה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃ וְקָֽבְרוּ֙ כׇּל־עַ֣ם הָאָ֔רֶץ וְהָיָ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם לְשֵׁ֑ם י֚וֹם הִכָּ֣בְדִ֔י נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה׃ וְאַנְשֵׁ֨י תָמִ֤יד יַבְדִּ֙ילוּ֙ עֹבְרִ֣ים בָּאָ֔רֶץ מְקַבְּרִ֣ים אֶת־הָעֹֽבְרִ֗ים אֶת־הַנּוֹתָרִ֛ים עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ לְטַהֲרָ֑הּ מִקְצֵ֥ה שִׁבְעָה־חֳדָשִׁ֖ים יַחְקֹֽרוּ׃ וְעָבְר֤וּ הָעֹֽבְרִים֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ וְרָאָה֙ עֶ֣צֶם אָדָ֔ם וּבָנָ֥ה אֶצְל֖וֹ צִיּ֑וּן עַ֣ד קָבְר֤וּ אֹתוֹ֙ הַֽמְקַבְּרִ֔ים אֶל־גֵּ֖יא הֲמ֥וֹן גּֽוֹג׃ וְגַ֥ם שֶׁם־עִ֛יר הֲמוֹנָ֖הֿ וְטִהֲר֥וּ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ {פ}
